Imagine Africa in 1836—a time when the northern stretches of the continent were well-charted, known to civilizations for centuries. But south of the Sahara, beyond the scattered coastal settlements, lay an expanse that was largely uncharted—vast, mysterious, and full of life. This was the ‘dark continent’ to the Western eye, a place of myth and rumor.
It was into this wilderness that Captain William Cornwallis Harris, an officer with the East India Company, ventured. Drawn by stories of an African paradise teeming with wildlife, he set out to explore the continent’s interior. Harris was more than a soldier; he was an artist and naturalist with a keen eye, determined to document the wildlife he encountered. His journey into the southern heart of Africa would unveil the rich variety of fauna that few outside the continent had ever seen.

Harris’s expedition was not just an adventure; it was a mission to capture the essence of a world unknown to the West. As he encountered Africa’s great beasts—lions, rhinos, hippos, and more—he committed their forms to paper with skill and precision. His work became a vital record of Africa’s wildlife and marked him as one of the foremost wildlife artists of his time. Each piece stands as a testament to his deep connection with the land and its creatures.
