Example of Bruce Backhouse's watercolours in a French Oak frame
Bruce Backhouse, born in 1950 in Pietermaritzburg, KZN, is a seasoned artist with a distinctive focus on watercolor landscapes.
His artistic journey was initiated at Rhodes University, studying under Brian Bradshaw, and was later enhanced through a vibrant 25-year career as an Art Director and Creative Director at various ad agencies in South Africa.
In 2004, Bruce committed himself fully to his artistic calling. He broadened his perspective through studies at the National Portrait Gallery, London, in 2006. Although skilled in figural satires, his passion lies primarily within the realm of traditional landscape painting.
Bruce offers a fresh perspective on the oft-explored South African landscape, encouraging viewers to reconsider their perceptions. This journey of reevaluation extends beyond the artist to the viewer.
His captivating works grace multiple exhibitions and collections across South Africa, with major banks, corporations, and private collectors globally cherishing his art.
