Born and educated in Durban, David Wheildon Oosthuizen developed his passion for art at Hilton College and furthered it with an art degree at Natal Technikon.
After starting his career in the textile industry, he took on his middle name, Wheildon, for his painting career, reflecting his lineage to the English potter, Thomas Wheildon.
David's passion revolves around perfecting his technique. His favored subject is the Nguni cattle, whose colors and patterns he captures with authenticity by drawing reference from Nguni stud farms in Kwa Zulu Natal, primarily Aldora Farm and Kwalalamvuba Stud.
His unique approach to art involves a mix of mediums on canvas, starting with a primed foundation, then adding watercolor as the main color source. He uses glazes to separate the additional acrylic and oil layers, sealing his work with clear varnish for protection against elements.
Living with his family in the Hilton area, David finds inspiration in the Midlands, visiting often to gather references for his paintings. He also embraces the opportunity to create commissioned pieces tailored to individual specifications.
