TRADITIONAL LANDSCAPES

John Smith

John Smith, a native of Worcester, Cape, was born into an artistic family in 1944.

Following his education, he apprenticed under the Dutch artist Johan Oldert, leading to his professional art career in 1974. He has honed his talent in oil, pastels, and watercolour, while sharing his skills through private art tuition for the past three decades.

As a founding member of both the Watercolour Society of South Africa and the Visual Arts Network of South Africa, Arts and Culture (NACSA), and KwaZulu Natal Visual Arts, John has significantly contributed to the art community. He has provided mentorship to fellow artists, galleries, and corporations while also serving on several committees.

John's extensive body of work includes eight solo exhibitions and multiple joint showcases across South Africa, most notably “Art South Africa Today” and the “Ruth Prowse Exhibition” in Cape Town. His artwork is cherished by both national and international collectors.

John is partnered with Ingrid Lotter, a renowned calligrapher. The duo have collaborated on several projects, including the "Freedom of Howick" citation for Nelson Mandela. Currently, John continues to create from his home studio in Durban North, KZN.
