Nora Newton

Nora Newton studied art at school and went on to study Graphic Design at the Cape Technicon. She has trained under well known artists and instructors such as Sheri Hornsey, Margi Johnson, Ryno Swart and Marcelle Lyons. Nora worked for a number of advertising agencies and design studios in Cape Town and Gauteng as well as working freelance. She has been exhibiting successfully since her first solo show in Franschoek in 1998 and is now working as a professional artist concentrating solely on her painting.

Nora’s evocative and sensitively rendered paintings are inspired mostly by nature, particularly when bathed in early morning or late afternoon light. Her subject matter ranges from light infused landscapes, especially the very horizontal landscapes of Churchhaven (West Coast), the Karoo, and the Transkei with its cattle on the beaches, which personify the slow pace of life there.

Nora has always enjoyed portraiture and the human figure, and captures the innocence, humour and simplicity of the rural Cape children, and the mystery of the female nude. All her paintings whether depicting nature or figures are painted with her unique use of colour and light and a bold use of composition as can be seen in her series of paintings depicting indigenous trees.

She has exhibited :
2003: Solo Exhibition of Pastels and Oils, Edrich Art, Stellenbosch
2006-7: Solo Exhibition of oils paintings, Melissa’s, Newlands, Cape Town
2007: Solo Exhibition, Investment Art, Cape Town
2008: Solo Exhibition, Dorp Street Gallery, Cape Town
2009: Joint Exhibition, Dorp Street Gallery, Cape Town
2009: Joint Exhibition, Elizabeth Gordon Gallery, Durban
