Wim Rautenbach

Wim was born in 1975 and matriculated at the Hoerskool Randburg in 1993 having done art as a subject.

He completed the National Diploma in Fine Arts at the Technikon, Pretoria, majoring in painting and art history. His other subjects were Figure Drawing, Printmaking, Photography, Sculpture and Ceramics.

As a freelance artist Wim does a lot of commissioned work with his biggest assignment being 26 portraits in oil of the staff of the Faculty of Engineering of Tswane University of Technology.

In 2001, he attended an art course with KZN artist, Anton Benzon, who encouraged him to concentrate on landscape painting.

His first solo exhibition was at Coetzee Roux Gallery in 2002 which was followed by a further three.

He did a solo exhibition at the Elizabeth Gordon Gallery in May, 2008 and a group exhibition in June, 2009.

Wim travels throughout South Africa to gather information and inspiration for his landscapes.  He feels he gains inspiration by actually experiencing the space and the environmental elements around him.  He describes his paintings as “landscapes with feeling” and his free and loose brush strokes show a spontaneous honesty.  His use of strategically placed dark strokes to create balance shows a quiet confidence and his ability to challenge the viewer with his slightly out of focus style is immensely appealing.

He is represented in KZN at the Elizabeth Gordon Gallery.
